Reading 32 years of diesel prices
How to read this history
Each point is one week of EIA's on-highway diesel survey, the figure the trade calls the DOE number: the average taxed pump price of No. 2 diesel, priced as of Monday and posted Tuesday. It is the same series the DOE number page carries for this week, run back to its first week, Mar 21, 1994. The figures are nominal dollars, as EIA publishes them, so a 1990s price and a 2026 price are not adjusted for inflation. EIA redesigned the survey sample effective June 13, 2022 and says estimates on either side of that date are not directly comparable; the chart marks the break.
When the record was set
Three runs set the record in the past two decades: in 2007 the price passed the $3.157 high of Oct 24, 2005 in the week of Nov 5, 2007 and peaked at $4.764 in the week of Jul 14, 2008; in 2022 the price passed the $4.764 high of Jul 14, 2008 in the week of Mar 7, 2022 and peaked at $5.810 in the week of Jun 20, 2022; in 2026 the price passed the $5.810 high of Jun 20, 2022 in the week of Sep 7, 2026 and peaked at $6.529 in the week of Sep 21, 2026. That $6.529 is the highest weekly price on record through the week of Nov 2, 2026. The 2008 average was $3.803 and the 2022 average $4.989. The lowest week on record is $0.953, the week of Feb 22, 1999. The lowest full-year average of the past twenty years was $2.304, in 2016.
How the regions spread apart
In 2000 California's diesel averaged 23.2 cents a gallon more than the Gulf Coast's. In 2025 the gap was 152.5 cents. The West Coast's gap over the Gulf Coast widened from 16.4 cents to 104.3 cents over the same years. The reasons are on the West Coast and California pages, and each region page charts its own line against the US average.
Diesel against gasoline
For the week of Nov 2, 2026 the US average diesel price was $6.292 a gallon and regular gasoline $4.153, so diesel cost $2.14 a gallon more. Both figures are EIA's weekly US retail averages, taxes included, priced the same Monday. Diesel has cost more than regular gasoline in every weekly survey since the week of Aug 31, 2015, 584 weeks in a row; the last week gasoline cost as much or more was Aug 24, 2015. Across all 1,703 paired weeks since Mar 21, 1994, diesel cost more in 81.0% of them. It was not always so. From 1994 through 2004, gasoline cost more than diesel in 270 of 563 weeks. The widest gap on record is $2.14, for the week of Nov 2, 2026. EIA dates the change to September 2004, when diesel became generally dearer than regular gasoline the year round. The table below gives each year, and the diesel vs gasoline guide explains the gap.
